So, in the midst of all the crazy work, I've still managed to harvest and can or freeze lots from the garden. Our tomatoes got blight this year...a very quick and deadly experience. They were fine one day, and the next they were not!
But...we still had lots of tomatillos, which was my primary concern because I seem to have fallen in love with salsa verde. We managed to can 24 big jars, also using super hot jalepenos from our garden. I made half a batch of super-hot and half a batch of "tolerable" salsa.
Not only that, but when I went to harvest all the basil we've grown this year, I realized I had grown much more than I intended! The basil really did well...seemed to grow into big bushes before our eyes. I hardly recognized it and passersby commented on its giganticness. So we canned (I think total) close to 40 jars, which were stuck in the freezer (ours and various neighbors!) for later use.
I have to say, this season was the best. The little one was so involved, from seedlings to harvesting. I wasn't able to be as attentive to the garden as I normally am because of my busy season, but it all flowed nicely.
Now we have a crop of winter beets, carrots, and lettuce growing in the back. I also harvested all our pumpkins and winter squash. So nice to continue to make our meals from things we have grown.
What was your garden season like?!
