we got our preview from the amazing photographers. you can see more here. xo
we were very social yesterday, visiting new and old friends all day. we got back at a ridiculously late time (let's just say it was almost the next day) and collapsed into bed. mark likes to sleep late and i'm usually up early staring at the ceiling, listening to his breathing, and daydreaming about all the things i want to accomplish in a day.
today was one of those mornings. when we ventured downstairs to start coffee (for him) and tea (for me) we sat on the couch reading the new Selby book and making more plans for the house. we have many projects coming up...big projects. they are exciting and it's fun to dream up how we want things to look and actually make it happen.
then we ate a delicious breakfast of omelettes stuffed with fresh kale, mushroom sauteed in butter, homemade pesto, and feta cheese. afterwards we spent the better part of the morning hanging some new pieces on the walls. i was excited to print and hang my first photograph (one from NYC) and have it on our wall. the little one thinks it's pretty swell.
now he's working on wedding stuff while i work on editing. it's hard to believe the day is almost over...i've only crossed off three things out of my to-do list of 10.
the red came out great, by the way. almost like it's always been there...
what did your sunday morning look like?
we make it a priority to budget in an evening out a week. lots of time we are getting a glass of wine and splitting some appetizers to save money, but getting out is so important to us that we just make it happen. being around other people and experiencing life and energy and new places and new food is something that inspires and motivates us.
but for those times we decide a night in would be preferable, we make it special in our own way.
our favorite nght in includes:
i started making up a dipping sauce for artichokes and french fries that i feel i have perfected over the years. it's so delicious and will really impress your friends!
Garlic Aioli Dipping Sauce
Mix all ingredient together and viola! You have a fabulous dipping sauce for all kinds of things. We have even been known to dip potato chips in this. And it makes great salad dressing as well if you thin it a little more with olive oil. We ate this with our handcut fries and artichokes!
Happy Date Night! What are some of your date night ideas?
we had a lovely brunch yesterday at one of our favorite places to eat. salt water farm is as amazing as it sounds and we have never been let down by a meal. this was our first experience with brunch and we were thrilled. there were at least 6 sides of bacon ordered for the table, delicious pastries, espresso (mark highly recommends "the hitch"), and savory greens with eggs.
we enjoyed the company, the laughter, the food, the sun, and even though it was completely freezing outside, we were all warm and cozy and well fed.
later we ventured into a nearby town for some antique hunting and we left with everything we had intended to find. love it when that happens!
now we're settling in to our work week. how was your weekend?
sunday morning mark and i woke up to a skylight covered with snow. the first snow of the season. it had already stopped and only left us with a half an inch, but it was enough to fill the house with a bright white light.
something about it made us slow down a bit. we lingered on the couch for a couple of hours sipping espresso and eating bacon while reading the paper. it was exactly how a sunday morning should go.
the little one went to sleep last night telling me that she was so sure it would snow overnight, but the forecast didn't look like that was likely. but sure enough, when we opened our eyes at 6 o'clock it was snowing. and it's still snowing.
the little one jumped out of bed and threw on her winter gear and headed out to play before school. the smile on her face was absolutely priceless!
what are you doing for the holidays?
with the little one at her papa's on the weekends, we take the time to catch up what we can't quite fit in during the school week. we typically choose somewhere to go and explore for a day, sometimes meeting clients too or joining friends for food and drinks.
this weekend we wandered around portland and brunswick. i dropped off a bunch of clothes at my favorite little resale shop and we proceeded to try the espresso at every coffee shop on the way to the water. we were a little bit energetic by the afternoon!
it was such a lovely day and felt so good to get out and about. being around other people really recharges me for a week of work ahead.
mark took a bunch of photos of me, and i of him. this is one of my all-time favorite outfits. the total outfit, from the shoes up cost me $38!
what's your favorite oufit?!
remember me?! i used to write here at least a few times a week.
now i am that person who can't possibly fit in a third of what she needs to in a day.
so that leaves me having to prioritize! i have a giant list by the side of my keyboard that is all numbered from the most crucial and time sensitive to the semi-crucial and time sensitive. that's about it.
i took a day to relax over the weekend and now i'm paying the price. but it's good. i love it! love love love it!
i just need 10 more hours in a day, two full-time assistants, and a constant stream of espresso.
we had a shoot on monday up in rockland and the little one assisted me. she's been waiting to join me all year long on a shoot. she got her Nikon D70s ready and charged the night before. then she kicked butt on the shoot. she got some amazing photos. seriously! i can't wait to share some. what a talented girl!
we ended up at breakwater lighthouse on the beach as the sun was setting. she took some photos of us, we took some of her, he took some of me, and well...here you go...
what have you been up to?!
makes me laugh like no other
loves me more than i thought was possible
has the best arms for hugging
always has something witty to say
has four pairs of glasses that look exactly the same
can't think before coffee in the morning
loves jazz music
has the most tremendous singing voice
loves to snuggle
is always making me things to show how much he loves me
has a shoe obsession which far surpasses mine
is the first person i go to for fashion advice
wants to be with me every single second of every single day, and when he can't, he gets sad
encourages me to be the best i can possibly be
has two enormous boxes of socks
gets four different fashion magazines in the mail
adores our chickens
loves me a whole lot.
and i love him.
i've been on a major dealine for a shoot lately so pardon my adsence!
mark took me on a boston getaway for my birthday this year. it was a blast. we spent two days shopping, eating, drinking, laughing, walking all around, and just relaxing and enjoying each other's company. he treated me to some fabulous meals, bought me a pair of great boots, some new music, made me a painting (love it!), and so many other wonderful things. he treated me like a queen. i've never felt so loved before.
for those of you who may be visiting boston soon, these were some of our favorite stops:
mark took all these photos (other than the two of him!) this weekend. he's really loving my canon...
what did you do this past weekend? this next one we are planning on winterizing the house! i can't believe it's october already!
thank you so much for entering the giveaway! mary graciously offered two more signed copies, so that's FOUR winners total! hooray!
mary chose the winners! they are:
every year we go to what we call "blueberry hill" for a hike and a picnic. there is a fabulous stone cottage at the top covered with a sod roof where we like to eat our lunch and run around playing hide and seek.
this particular visit was the most magical one yet. we raced to the top, stopping to take a picture in the same place every year, then unloaded our feast. we dined on mostly things from our garden, sparkling beverages, and homemade chocolate chip cookies.
we made friends with some others at the top, who later gave the little one a kite to keep after they were so impressed by her ability to fly it with no wind!
he found his first four leaf clover after i told him he would. i had found one that very morning. his face lit up like a child's with absolute glee at the four leaf clover clutched in his hand.
we flew our kite despite having no breeze, raced around playing hide and seek, checked out the boats sailing in the ocean below through the binoculars, and then leisurely walked back down the hill to the car for more adventures.
wow. life is full. life is busy.
we have been doing so much lately. i have a hard drive full of photos from the past two weeks and literally no time to upload them. i'm hoping soon i'll be able to have a chance to sit down here and share some. some sweet moments were captured.
tomorrow we're off to another wedding, and the weekend after too. then we have a couple of weeks to just relax and enjoy summer before it passes us by. i've booked a camping trip for us and we spent yesterday getting things we needed to prepare. we're all so excited!
thank you for all your enthusiasm about the e-course giveaway! i'm announcing the winner on sunday evening, so there's still time to enter! and thank you so very much for warmly welcoming mark once again to this space. what a sweet guy, eh?
for now, here are some photos from an outting we had this past week. an evening at our favorite place to eat...
the sun was out. we took shelter in the shade under a tree. him and i sipping white wine on the hammock, swaying back and forth. she settled on the picnic blanket with her markers and paper, sipping on lemonade.
she sang some songs, we talked. there were trips inside for more drinks, library books, and the Times. we snuggled, all three of us, in the hammock reading to each other.
we hung the clothes to dry and painted our new shed. we watched a lot of old colorful cars go by. the windows were up and the doors open wide. the gentle breeze blew in one window and out the other. the house smelled of freshly cut grass and fragrant flowers.
there were giggles and many pushes on the swing in the apple tree. he took pictures while i obliged her with some underdogs.
then we retreated back to the hammock, all quite content with our afternoon of doing "nothing."
sometimes home is the best place to be, and i think that if we had the choice, it's the only place we'd be.
thanks to all who entered the lisa leanord giveaway! sorry for the delay in announcing the winner...we had a wedding to shoot yesterday and have been super busy. random.org chose #95!
I love the twig necklace. I always wanted a pice of her jewelery, but just seem to never buy anything for myself - especially with a son in college
Congrats Libbe! please e-mail me (email@example.com) and i'll pass along your info to lisa!
i was going through my photos recently in an attempt to clean off my desktop and came across oodles of mark that i have taken over the past few months. some don't make it on here. others do. before i put them on the external hard drive, i wanted to share some here.
he is a great subject. i think he's so photogenic (and it helps that i absolutely adore him!) and his style is all his own. pretty good guy style inspiration here. we often walk out of the bedroom wearing the same thing (and one of us always has to change so we don't dress alike). he gets excited about yellow cords, wing tips, striped socks, and he always rolls his pants. he cuts the sleeves off of his stripe marimekko shirts for the summer, always has a hankie in his back pocket, and sews patches on holes like nobody's business. he's in search of the perfect button down cardigan, and an indigo blue suit for our wedding. we pour over W magazine together and he's the best person to ask, "does this look good on me?!" because he's got really good taste.
enjoy! (oh, and the second picture down...? not his empties! random ones in the big city!)
hope you are all having a fabulous weekend!
our weekend started with friday night breakfast for dinner! we had all four burners going making omelettes filled with greens and goat cheese. we light our candles every night, say our blessing, and dig in. then we have our family movie night. this week it was "the sandlot" which is a personal favorite of mine!
saturday morning started with typing some letters, taking some pictures, a bath before her ballet recital!
then it was off to the theater. she looked so amazing up there and enjoyed herself so much. she's already looking forward to next year.
then it was back for a backyard cookout. we ate smores too!
sunday was full of birthday party fun, gardening, and another cookout at a friend's house this time.
it was a full and busy weekend. we collapsed into bed sunday night absolutely exhausted, but i told mark it was the best weekend ever.
what did you do over the weekend?
stay tuned for a giveaway tomorrow!
what can i say about california? once again i fell completely in love with everything there. i am a west coast girl at heart, for sure. mark got his first taste of west coast air and is completely smitten as well. he didn't want to leave, and neither did i! any blog readers living out there (in CA)...do you ever want to do a house swap for a week?!
the wedding was spectacular and marvelous...better than i ever could have imagined. we spent all of saturday shooting at the beautiful el encanto hotel, and the rest of the time was spent riding our beach cruisiers through the city, laying on the beach, and relaxing at our awesome Airbnb house.
i went running everyday, and at one point even joined in on a 5k race by mistake! we walked miles and miles everyday, ate fresh fruit and drank champagne, and soaked up as much sun as we possibly could.
we marveled at all of the plants and gardens and fruit trees and beautiful birds. we sat in the sun to enjoy our morning coffee on the patio, and ate dinner on State Street at a great place that immediately became our favorite.
it was hard coming home to 30 degree weather, especially after a long red-eye flight. we are trying to settle back into maine life with our layers and sweaters and wool socks. but boy...we'll be really excited when we get to go back and smell that sweet california air again...
how have you been?!
saturday late afternoon we headed down to portsmouth, nh. we walked around, grabbed some espresso and ventured into galleries and stores.
then sunday we prepared for a dinner party with some fabulous friends.
now it's monday. we settle into the work week and our time away. we look forward to coming together each night, celebrating with a lovely dinner and glass of wine. then we work in the studio, creating work inspired by one another.
what did you do on sunday? xoxo
what a busy weekend!
this is what our saturday looked like... (sunday to follow!)
he leaves me love notes. and i always put a note in his lunch. everyday.
gherkin enjoys the sun. these poor cats are now indoor cats and they are struggling...
baked apple pancake. i bake so much for them and i adore it so. recipe here.
and espresso for us.
creative play in the morning.
she loved it. she really requested "pie" upon waking. so this is what i gave her. she approved.
and he can't be more grateful for my baking. he's always so excited when something comes out of the oven!
what did your saturday look like? xoxo
we had the most fabulous weekend, complete with sun and warmth and open doors and laundry on the new line and painting outside and drinks on the patio.
we talked about garden plans and wedding plans and played baseball in the yard and went for walks and smiled in the sunshine. i think all of us in maine have been awaiting a day just like that. we just didn't want to go in.
here is what it all looked like:
what did you do this past weekend?
a simple thursday. this is how it goes...
espresso. making lunches for my loves. drop the little one off at school. come back home. kiss m goodbye for the day. go for a run. tea.
back home. the sun is finally out. we are excited. it's warm. i text mark and tell him to come home soon! we are enjoying the sun in the front. i sip a glass of wine sent by a dear blog reader, thinking about how lucky we are to have people who love us from so far away. she reads to me from her new chapter book. we play catch and run around in the sun, dreaming of summer gardens and all the things we will create with our new yard.
his truck pulls in the driveway. i run and jump into his arms. there are kisses and hugs and smiles all around. another glass of wine is poured. we settle into our evening. i make dinner, she runs around and draws pictures, he helps us both.
there are games before bed. she is read to from a book she as been longing for. then it's upstairs to the studio. mark studies his new camera and now he is typing on his type writer. a love letter, i presume. i just checked...i was right. he's typing how much he loves me.
then it's bed. and tomorrow it's friday. and we all love fridays.
what did you do this thursday?
well, we had a full and fabulous weekend here. we got a lot done around the house, but also managed to get out exploring both days. we went to some thrift shops saturday where i scored some great clothes and even found my heels for the wedding. we walked around one of our favorite towns and explored some new shops we fell in love with. ended our adventure with stopping for a treat (an affagato) at the best little gelato place.
then a lovely sunday morning complete with sleeping in, a 6 mile run, then bacon and espresso (our new morning favorite!). we re-painted the kitchen floor and headed out for drinks and apps at our favorite place while it dried, made our guest list for our wedding and started brainstorming our save the dates.
such a full weekend! what did you do?
i feel like the real erin has been a little absent lately. you know...the one who checks in and writes what's in her heart. that one.
and really, i've been meaning to, but life is moving by at such a fast pace that i haven't even had a chance to catch up. photos, recaps, simple words, and quirky little bits are all i've been able to really put together. and i've been enjoying them, but sometimes you just need something really genuine.
a couple of nights ago i was laying in bed thinking about where i am, where i've been, how i got here and what's next. making it happen is always in my mind. there's a lot i need to make happen this year. working hard to make ends meet, being prepared for the unexpected, continuing my own personal work, following my heart, manifesting the life we strive to live...it's continuous effort and work and requires mindfulness daily. but it's something that makes life worth living. it's the reason i am excited to get out of bed in the morning, full steam ahead.
i'm a hard worker. seriously hard. i'm the last one to give up. i push through my work like it's nobody's business. i'm always looking for more, a way to do things better, a way to become stronger, wiser, and more capable. a way to be a better individual, lover, mother, friend, sister, daughter. because i believe if we ever settle for what is now, we never will find out what comes next. and what comes next is usually better. there is always something to learn, so bring it on. growth is essential to happiness.
i tend to play things safe. something that i feel has held me back. i dream big, but when it comes to taking risks, i tend to think in my libra-ish ways and sometimes end up talking myself out of it. but then there's him. he ever so gently nudges me into the unknown, with full faith and encouragement. like i am capable of anything. so i leap. i release my firm grasp and just go, into the unknown. the scary. that hazy gap between what we know and what we'd like to know, where we find out just what it takes to get there. and his hand is there for me to hold if i need it, but you know what? i dig my heels into the ground, wipe the sweat from my brow, and say thanks, but no thanks. i can do it myself. because that way i will learn.
he tells me i'm stubborn, but in a good way. i am. for better or worse, it's usually what pushes me ahead even when i think i should have given up long ago.
but you know what? if i had given up throughout my life, i would not be here. and here is pretty darn good.
despite all the leaping, i'm more grounded than i've ever been in my entire life. i'm me. plain and simple. and he's there, always, with a smile on his face and an, "i told you you could do it."
and he's right. i can.
a big thanks to maria for taking this photo of us saturday night! we headed out to an annual fancy auction and had a blast getting all dressed up.
here's what we wore:
and what we're wanting:
what are you wearing and wanting? post on your blog and leave your link in the comment section below!
well, the blizzard started today. it's hitting us pretty slowly, but school was canceled and mark stayed home from work. so we had a day all together, and we have nothing to complain about a three day weekend!
the winds are picking up (hurricane force, really?!) and we're preparing for the bulk of the snow tonight. tomorrow we will have to shovel out so we can eventually leave the house, and there will likely be snow fort making and snowball fights. then mark and i are headed out someplace fancy for a special night out on the town.
but here's a little glimpse at our snow day...
morning puzzles. she started this before we had the bacon going. she also had her running shoes on. she brought them to our bed, woke us up, and said, "I'm ready to run on the treadmill!" (and she ran...for about 30 minutes...)
morning grinding of the beans. every morning. sometimes i hear it from upstairs and i swear i can smell it too.
morning reads. she still loves some of the same books i read her over and over again as a wee toddler.
it's a blizzard out there. snowy and windy. very pretty. i love watching the snow fall outside of our tall windows. i feel like we're in a snowglobe.
bacon and eggs. he made bacon this morning. i made a "toad in the hole" for her. i had my tea, he had his coffee, she had her tea. we feasted on the best snowday breakfast ever.
him. cutest kitty ever. he also likes to pose for the camera. he likes to sit in my seat in front of the heater and get warm.
horse play in her room.
she learned how to knit in school. she's knitting me a scarf (love!).
we had one of her very best friends over for afternoon play. they filled the living room with toys and adventures. i fed them crackers and cheese and hummus and hot chocolate.
he wore a vest his mama knit him. i told him he looked like charlie brown and was wicked cute. then i kissed him. the little one thinks it's absolutely hilarious when we kiss.
we hung his latest piece. he painted me.
dinner was moose chili (seriously) and a glass of wine. we ate by candlelight and talked about our day.
then, inevitably it's cleanup. sometimes we battle each other over who does the dishes. it's comical. he always says, "you cooked! let me clean!" and i always say, "who cares! i love to cook! go paint! i'll clean up." but he tells me to get lost and cleans up. then i take pictures of him doing it....
now we're painting up in the studio. he's working on a huge piece. i'm finishing up a small one. we'll soon head to bed knowing we'll wake up to even more of a winter wonderland outside. there will be bacon (again) and coffee and tea, and we will settle into another mellow day.
happy weekend, friends! what are your plans?!
m loads the kiln at work on wednesdays. he's gone long hours and i miss him so. tonight he got out a little bit early and i started pouring the wine and prepping the fritatta for dinner. but now it's more than two hours later...we decided to forego dinner to work in the studio. we're suckers for getting stuff done.
we sat down to do our february playlist for you all. we entertain quite a bit. we love company. we love cooking. we love talking. we love it all. and we love putting together the perfect little playlist for when we have people over. this playlist was what we would play during dinner.
i found Rdio.com today and i am in love. it's the most perfect (and easiest!) way to share music with you all. so here's our playlist! (subscribe to hear the whole thing...it's wicked easy!)
mark and i goof around late at night in the studio. we're working on a whole bunch of ukulele duets (can't wait until he breaks out his harmonicas and plays with me...he's goooood!).
this is one of my favorite songs. this was a practice take, but we thought it was so funny that we didn't want to change a thing. we're not great, but we have fun. i put it on the blog's facebook page first, and it was decided it MUST go up on the blog. so here it is...our silliness...
