Words From Sasa :: You and I

Sasa wrote this post after a lovely fourth of July. It is just now getting on here because of our hectic week! And I'm thrilled to say that he took ALL the pictures!

Last night was wonderful.  We went to a friends house to watch the fireworks over the river.  It was the perfect spot, on a second floor balcony high above street, overlooking the harbor. We could look down and watch the crowd milling about and listen to the music coming from the wharf.  The sky was clear and the air was sweet and we had each other to hold onto. Then the nearly full moon came up, and it felt as though the whole world stopped and it was just me and Erin smiling like kids at how perfect summer can be.

The weather has been so wild: so much rain and fog and then ferocious thunderstorms.  Yesterday the sun came out for the first time in a month, just long enough for us to go to the beach and drink in the light and the warmth. And then a wall of dark clouds appeared to the north and the wind became fierce. For a while we just laid there and watched the clouds getting bigger and darker and closer.  And then there was a pure animal understanding that it was going to pour, and as one, everyone on the beach packed up and fled. 

By the time we got home the sky was light and by the time we rinsed off the sand and salt, it was sunny again.  It is amazing to me how quickly things can change. How sun follows storm,  how clouds follow clarity,  how time follows eternity. And yet there is something always there, aware and present to notice every thing. From the simple joy of seeing the moon again for the first time, to the frenzy of fireworks filling the sky,  it is all there for us. And for me,  I am so grateful that it is always Erin there, sharing the joy of being here together. Through everything that happens the real fireworks is being able to turn to her and see a huge smile of amazement light up our world.  No matter what is going on outside,  it feels like the sun is always shining.

Words from Sasa :: Prescription for Joy

One of the highlights of my day is when we get up early and go off on an adventure.  Watching Elisabeth invent the world every morning is so amazing.  The other day we walked down to the river. The sun was barely up and the water was perfectly still. We stood on the shore in awe, it was like it was a new earth. The sky, the trees, the water, the birds, and us, all waking up together.

After awhile Elisabeth whispered "it's so quiet", so we found some ginourmous rocks and threw them in the river. And splash! The sound of water erupted and we burst into giggles. We found some sticks and pretended to go fishing. We saw horseshoe crabs doing what crabs do and a jellyfish floating by like a visitor from another world.  Then we climbed up the hill and said goodbye and thank you to our new world.  Everyday is a good day when it starts with such joy, and I am so grateful to Elisabeth for sharing her joy with me so freely.

So smile, bend, smell the flowers, put one in your hair,  make music, dance, giggle, take a chance, be a good friend, give a gift, be adventurous, whistle, skip, listen, twirl, feel, touch, snuggle, be still.

And like a child,  jump into the moment with all that you are, and share yourself with all that is. A whole world is waiting for us, gratefully and joyfully.

Words From Sasa

I'm very happy to welcome Sasa to the blog. Things have been so crazy around here and I find I have little time to sit at the computer, so it's nice to have Sasa say some words every now and then. His view of life and the world is so sweet and special, and I'm excited to share it with you. He makes an ordinary afternoon on the back porch full of sweetness and love. So, without further ado, please welcome Sasa...

Thank you Erin for opening your blog to me, the way you are always opening your heart and your home and your life to make room for me. And thank you to all of her readers for being so welcoming and supportive.  Everything is opening up around here. The snow is retreating, like the tide going out, revealing amazing smells of earth and warmth.  The sky has a new light, brighter, but also softer, and much sweeter. 

We spent time Sunday on the back porch, just letting ourselves open up.  The sun, the warm air, the sounds of birds all conspired to convince us to close our eyes and let ourselves breathe. It felt wonderful.  I could totally taste what the maple trees in the cemetery up the street must be feeling.  How all this warmth opens something deep inside us and life starts to flow furiously in a rush of sweetness.

This is the end of our first season together at the blue house. Winter was the perfect time to be nesting, snuggling in with the little one, reading lots of books, and making our house a home.

Now the windows are thrown open, the little one is out in the evening riding her tricycle, exploring the neighborhood, and we are expanding our life together to embrace the world outside.  The sweetness of it all flavors our days and nights. It's an honor to be in this space here with you all. Thank you for sharing it with me. Until next time...
